在绍兴县富盛镇的 town, we live near the vast coördinate system of the mountains. the region is known for its beautiful landscapes and abundant natural resources. the most remarkable thing about this place is that it's a center for one of the largest plant communities in the world—a field of long-stemmed bamboo.
in springtime, when we harvest our crops and vegetables, we dig up small bamboo stems from the earth to grow new ones. as time goes on, these stems look like little baby bamboos, but they're still just tiny—until one day, a boy named yang finds them among old trees. “can you tell me which tree it is?” yang asks.
the young bamboo looks so small compared to the size of the trees around it that we couldn't even see it clearly. “it’s like a little ball, or maybe it’s just a leaf,” yang says.
“how do they grow?” the next day, yang finds another bamboo and asks why it's growing so slowly. the old tree on its left is young, but the one on the right looks much older—over 10 years old, in fact. yang notices how fast it’s growing because he can feel the bark digging into his arm.
this month, we are working hard to help the bamboo grow enough to make our own meat. for us, this is a way to earn money and have fresh food to eat each day—though it's not something we do every day.
“bamboo is good,” yang says to a neighbor, “because of the carbon dioxide in the air.”
since then, we’ve been digging bamboo stems all over the place in order to help these plants grow into strong bamboos that are ready for harvest.
the bamboo is special because it’s not just a plant that grows tall; it also has a life cycle—like other animals and plants. every month, it goes through three stages: cold growth phase, growth of new stems, and finally the bright golden stage when it’s ready to produce its products.
this year, we’re working hard to make sure each bamboo gets enough care and sunlight so that they can reach their full potential. without these bamboos, we might not have any fresh meat or any money to spend on our neighborhood’s community projects.
so far, the bamboo has helped us in so many ways that it’s hard to believe it could just be a plant with such complex life cycles and growth patterns.
nowhere is as beautiful as the mountains of绍兴—the soft green bamboo trees shimmer in the sunlight, their trunks swinging like a clock. they are a part of the rich natural environment here, and I know for sure that none of them would have survived without the care we give to them every day.
